As I journeyed through college and high school, I have had experiences that taught me valuable skills that I will carry with me as I continue in the workforce.
CAMPUS WEATHER SERVICE
During my time at Penn State, I was an active member of Campus Weather Service (CWS). Each week, the team records radio weather forecasts and produces a broadcast video. One of the greatest skills this club has taught me is better communication skills. My shift rotates each week on who records the broadcast video. Below are some examples of my CWS videos:
MARYELLEN'S WEATHER KIDS
When I was a junior in high school, I got the opportunity to meet Fox43 News' Chief Meteorologist MaryEllen Pann and help present the weather forecast on live TV! This experience was one that helped me realize I definitely wanted to pursue meteorology, whether that be in broadcast or not. See me on Fox 43 News here.
Currently, I work at the York County Office of Emergency Management. I was an intern there during the summer of 2019, and was hired during my last semester of college as a part-time employee. Once I graduated in December of 2019, I was hired full-time.
The biggest skill I have learned from this job is communication. I am constantly emailing/calling our local, state, and federal stakeholders. Some of my responsibilities include helping organizations (day cares, schools, etc.) create emergency plans, organize quarterly trainings for our local emergency management coordinators, and monitor the daily weather (of course!). I have been able to create weather briefings for my internal staff when severe weather is expected, as well as assist in damage assessment when severe weather hits. I was lucky enough to organize a training for our local officials to educate them on local weather verbiage. The following presentation along with an accompanying weather packet was presented to our local coordinators during my time as an intern. |
TJ Maxx |
I started working at the TJ Maxx in my hometown of Hanover when I was a senior in high school, and worked there for most of my college breaks. I learned a lot of valuable traits from that job such as patience, teamwork, and responsibility. This job also taught me time management, as I worked this job in high school when I was still juggling sport's practices and homework assignments.
